Strategic Teaching: What Matters Most for 21st Century Learning
Harvey Silver, National Presenter
8 - 9:45 a.m.
Many experts have pointed to instruction based on “21 century” skills as the best way to prepare students for the competitive global world of work that awaits them beyond school.  And while this movement towards cutting-edge, technology-enhanced teaching and learning has helped schools keep pace with the business world, it can be all too easy to forget that good thinking is a timeless concept.  In this workshop, we explore the question of how to ensure our students know how to use their minds well so they can succeed in school, meet high standards, and confront the challenges of their generation.  At the heart of our work will be four overarching standards that govern students’ ability to think and learn: the ability to read challenging and meaningful texts (rigor); the ability to solve complex problems (thought); the ability to understand oneself and others (diversity); and the ability to apply school learning to real-world settings (authenticity).  Participants will learn what each of the four standards looks like in various school settings and be introduced to specific research-based instructional strategies for teaching to the four standards.

Learn an overview of the steps and processes of a HS construction project from start to finish. The first of its kind in The Big Darby Accord, the idea behind the construction was to consciously incorporate green-friendly concepts to help adapt and preserve all of the attributes of this area. Simultaneously, we were mindful of designing "state of the art classrooms" in keeping with the tradition of our Hilliard footprint for high school settings.

What are the new survival skills our students will need to be competitive in a globalized economy? Education researcher Tony Wagner has conducted hundreds of interviews with business leaders and observed scores of classrooms in some of the nations’ most highly regarded public schools. He discovered a profound disconnect between what employers are looking for in young people today and what our schools are providing.

CRAFT of Thoughtful Leadership for 21st Century Schools
Harvey Silver, National Presenter
2 - 3:15 p.m.

Why do some schools achieve at high levels? Because they know their CRAFT. They know that their capacity to Collaborate, Reflect, Adapt, and Focus leads to Thoughtful teaching, learning, and leadership for all. In this workshop, we’ll explore each capacity in CRAFT, demonstrate how schools are currently building these capacities to create and sustain improvement, and provide administrators and teacher-leaders with a set of ready-to-use tools for collecting meaningful data about teaching and learning in 21st century schools.
