Building 21st Century Schools (Coaching for the 21st Century: The Roles of Integration Coaches for 21st Century Skills

Integration coaches for 21st century skills provide multiple support structures for teachers and students as they work to acquire the competencies needed for success in a Digital Age. Coaches from the Upper Arlington City Schools will share the many roles and approaches they are taking to foster these essential skills.

Student Engagement in the 21st Century Classroom

Engage in activities to strengthen your repertoire of differentiated instructional strategies for engaging all students to content while fostering critical and creative thinking as well as developing communication skills. The collaborative instructional strategies to be shared are supported by brain-based research and Marzano’s meta-analysis of instructional strategies that work.

Literacy Skills in the Content Areas: Interventions for Students Who Struggle

Students who struggle with basic literacy skills often fail to perform well in content areas (science, social studies, etc.) due to intense demands for reading, note-taking and writing skills. Participants will learn to estimate the 'readability' of textbooks, how to predict reading comprehension with the Cloze procedure, how to acquire, make and use books-on-tape/CD, and how to develop and use Guided Note Technique for lecture and study support. The presentation will also include brief demonstrations of technology including "talking" spell checkers and voice-output software for computers that can facilitate literacy skill applications.

Thinking Outside the Box: The Common Core Mathematics and 21st Century Skills Gayle Reidenbach, ESC of Central Ohio

Explore classroom possibilities to connect mathematics to the four Cs of 21st Century skills. We’ll collaborate to strengthen mathematics content knowledge using effective instructional practices. Critical thinking will be communicated through creative problem solving opportunities.  Instructional strategies connecting the common core standards and math literature include non-linguistic representations, models, manipulatives and building vocabulary.

Beyond Fluency Assessment: Tools for Pinpointing and Remediating Skill Deficits

Many students are identified for intervention by screening tools that focus on reading fluency. However, there can be many reasons for dysfluent reading that require precise, focused interventions. Dr. Tom Diebold will introduce educators to various assessment tools and techniques for isolating reading problems. Assessment tools demonstrated will include Lexia Learning's Quick Reading Test (QRT), Riverside Publishing's Diagnostic Assessments of Reading (DAR), and criterion-referenced, teacher-made tools that can be used to diagnose and monitor student progress.
