Dual Enrollment Partnerships

in Franklin, Delaware and Union counties

The ESC of Central Ohio provides coordination to establish dual enrollment partnerships between area school districts and higher education institutions.

Dual class enrollment provides high school students the opportunity to be enrolled in a college-level class taught in the high schools by a high school teacher with support from a college/university faculty member. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will receive both high school graduation credit and transcripted college credit from the cooperating institution of higher education (IHE).

Among the many advantages, dual enrollment has proven to be a successful strategy to reduce college costs for families, promote college to those who may not already be planning to attend, increase rigor in the senior year of high school, and provide professional development for high school teachers.

High school administrators have found the dual enrollment model to be very flexible in meeting the needs of students with varied academic abilities and interests:

  • The very top students who will definitely enroll in a four-year college and will not need remediation.
  • College-bound students who are likely to need remediation in college.
  • First-generation college students or students without the social support to consider college, but withthe academic potential to succeed in post-secondary education.
  • Students bound for career and technical education.

ESC Dual Enrollment history

Since fall 2006, the ESC has been instrumental in facilitating dual enrollment partnerships funded by the Ohio Core Grant. Partnerships were established between nine different colleges and universities with 14 school districts offering classes at 20 high schools.  During the 2008 academic year, more than 1,000 students earned more than 6,000 hours of transcripted college credit worth $3.4 million had the students paid tuition as full-time college students.

College/University participants include (with dual enrollment links where available):

As of January 2010 almost 70 percent of the 25 districts in the ESC service area offered dual enrollment courses. Several other districts are studying dual enrollment and determining how it might fit with their course offerings. Most districts offering dual enrollment are working on expanding their offerings.

An independent survey of ESC dual enrollment participants showed more than 90 percent of students, teachers and administrators expressed satisfaction with the program.

Although the Core Grant supporting dual enrollment is no longer available, the ESC is still actively involved in creating partnerships for school districts within itsservice area. Dual enrollment opportunities still remain with most of the original nine colleges/university partners. Each college/university has a different set of admissions requirements, course offerings, tuition and fees.
