Background Checks (BCI & FBI)
A Criminal Background Check is required for any individual employed in a public school setting. Assistance with the completion of this requirement is available, through the ESC of Central Ohio, to newly hired staff or interns in districts, agencies and universities. This process requires that an applicant’s fingerprints be taken digitally. Both a BCI and FBI check are required.
The combined total for both the BCI check and FBI check is $51. The cost for the BCI check alone is $27. The cost for the FBI check alone is $24.
The ESC accepts cash, Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards for fingerprinting fees. Checks are not accepted.
Individuals fingerprinted elsewhere within the last 12 months:
Applicants whose fingerprint results are on file with the Ohio Department of Education and who can provide copies of the paper results to the ESC, may not need to be fingerprinted again. Circumstances must be reviewed on an individual basis by an ESC representative.
Any individual who has completed a BCI check in the past 12 months may submit a Request to Release Form rather than being fingerprinted again. Submission of the form requires an $8 cashier’s check or money order payable to "Treasurer, State of Ohio." Please be advised, the form does not apply to the release of FBI results.
Please also be advised, it usually takes 30 days for results to be received when requested by way of the Request to Release Form.

Candidates for hire as substitutes will be fingerprinted as part of the pre employment process. This is to be completed prior to the substitute orientation.
