Interpreting Training 101: Best Practices, Code of Ethics, and Confidentiality

This interactive workshop will cover topics such as the Interpreter Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, interpreter roles, interpreter modes, cultural fluency, professionalism, and education-specific terminology. As a participant, you will take part in real-life scenarios interpreters experience, ask questions, connect with fellow interpreters, and discuss how to navigate a role that can be both complex yet rewarding. The trainer is Erika Shell Castro, Director of Interpreter services at Martti where she has worked since 2006 training over 900 interpreters. Erika was a Bridging the Gap trainer and is a trainer for The Community Interpreter. Erika is an advocate for immigrants and refugees and is a co-founder of LEON and La Clínica Latina, a free health clinic at OSU for Spanish-speaking uninsured patients. Erika was a recipient of Advocacy in Education Award from Ohio Department of Education in 2000. Erika was recently named the 2016 National Council of Interpreters in Healthcare Language Access Champion. This is a hands on training designed for adult learners who are currently working as interpreters, bilingual assistants or other professionals who serve as interpreters in the educational setting.
