Oral language development is essential for English learners and a foundation for literacy and academic success. Yet research shows that English learners typically spend only about 2% of class time talking. In these two online sessions, teachers will first look at the research behind the importance of oral language. Then the session explores best practices to teach and foster oral language for younger learners and newcomers. Topics include allotting time, using questions, and developing conversation skills. Intended audience includes Teachers of ELs or struggling native speakers in K-2, and teachers of newcomer English learners in any grade, EL Coordinators, Curriculum Directors, and Literacy Coaches.
