As part of its newly formed COVID Education Recovery Corps, this summer the ESC will be placing AmeriCorps members in schools to serve as reading tutors for grades K-3, math tutors for grades K-5, and SEL mentors for students in grades 5-12. In an effort to help districts and schools combat learning loss due to the pandemic, the Ohio Reading Corps, Ohio Math Corps, and AmeriCorps Mentors for Success are offering tutors and mentors from June 1 to August 20.
Tutors are trained through the ESC in their region to be able to provide effective tutoring. Trainings include basic literacy and math strategies, growth mindset, relationship building, and many more relevant topics. Mentors are trained to provide 1-on-1 and small group mentoring services to students with documented attendance challenges. Mentors provide individualized support in critical areas such as career exploration, college readiness, academic tutoring, and social-emotional skill building. Districts and schools will be asked to contribute matching dollars of $2,000 per tutor/mentor.
