Teacher Apprenticeship Program
A Pathway to Becoming a Teacher with Guaranteed Employment
The ESC's Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program (RTAP) offers an innovative pathway to teaching that addresses the constraints of traditional teacher preparation programs. The ESC is an approved teacher apprenticeship program sponsor, enabling it to collaborate with school districts (employers of apprentices) to identify and support individuals who aspire to join the K-12 teaching profession. In addition, this initiative empowers school districts and current teachers to take a proactive approach to recruiting and to actively participate in developing future educators. The current apprenticeship pathway is for Intervention Specialist, Mild to Moderate, and Moderate to Severe Licensure.
At the end of the program, based on the University program of choice and prerequisites, apprentices will have completed a BA, post-baccalaureate, or MA, and the required on-the-job training. To be a licensed teacher in Ohio, individuals must pass the Ohio Assessment to Educators (OAE).

Making the Pathway to a Teaching Degree Easier
There is ample research that highlights access and affordability as the main reasons individuals do not pursue teaching as a career path. The ESC's Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program (RTAP) addresses access barriers by partnering with colleges that provide virtual and hybrid coursework when teacher apprentices are not at work. The paid on-the-job training component of the program offers teacher apprentices an income during their preparation, reducing the financial challenges often associated with obtaining a teaching license.
