The ESC of Central Ohio issues certificates* to school bus and van drivers employed by local and exempted village school districts that participate in the ESC consortium. Each driver is required to submit the following:
– Classified employment application
– Physical (T-8)
– Driver abstract
– Pre-service training certificate (new driver and/or every six years)
– FBI background check** (new driver and/or every six years)
– BCI state background check
The ESC will verify the information and a certificate authorized by the ESC superintendent will be delivered to district transportation coordinators prior to the opening day of school. Driving certificates are continuously monitored for compliance.
The ESC also has the power to revoke the certificate of any driver who has failed to comply with requirements or who has been convicted of, or plead guilty to, a violation that results in a loss or suspension of driving rights.
*The certificate verifies that the driver is at least 18 years of age, is of good moral character and is qualified, physically and otherwise, for such position. ORC 3327.10
**Employees who recertify do not need a new state background check if employer has already completed an initial state background check and the employee can provide proof of being an Ohio resident for the last five years.
