Absenteeism Supports

Using Data to Prevent Chronic Absenteeism
In preparation for the 2023-2024 school year, this workshop will provide Building Principals and Asst. Principals at the elementary, middle, and high school levels with the latest research on school absenteeism. Attendees will learn about the areas of focus that all school buildings should be examining to prevent and reduce chronic absenteeism.

Behavioral & Mental Health Supports

Crisis Prevention Institute
The three-hour Crisis Prevention Institute refresher training is a review and practice of safe, nonharmful, behavior management skills and approaches. The program is designed to help professionals provide the best possible Care, Welfare, Safety, and Security (SM) of individuals presenting a range of behaviors.

Introduction to Restorative Practices
The Restorative Practices session will provide the participants with practical approaches designed to increase adult/student relationships, connection, safety, and opportunities for success and learning. This framework and active practice will include an overview of Restorative Practices, and alignment to school/classroom universal expectations using intentional and explicit practice.

Mental Health Resource Fair
Connect, grow, and learn at the ESC of Central Ohio's Mental Health Resource Fair. Connect & network with more than 30 mental health providers, gain mental health and wellness resources, explore partnerships with mental health providers, and more!

Dyslexia Supports

Introduction to the Orton-Gillingham Approach: Teaching Literacy Skills to Students with Dyslexia
**TRAINING IS FOR ESC OF CENTRAL OHIO MEMBER DISTRICTS ONLY** 
The Orton-Gillingham approach is a structured, systematic, multisensory, and diagnostic-prescriptive approach for the teaching of language skills (including reading, spelling, and handwriting) for students with dyslexia. This 10-day course will prepare educators to successfully implement high-quality reading instruction that aligns with the science of reading.

Dyslexia K-3 Course with Facilitation
Participants attending this week-long course will have the opportunity to complete online modules, engage in discussion, and take part in activities within a collaborative learning environment. At the conclusion of the week, participants will receive a certificate stating that they have met the professional development requirements of the Ohio Dyslexia Law (HB436).

English Learners Support

EL Institute
Day 1 June 8 | This innovative training will help all teachers transform their classrooms into vibrant spaces where students can use academic language to talk, read, write, and think about each lesson's content. This 7 Steps training outlines a dynamic process for structuring, planning, and facilitating a language-rich classroom.
Day 2 June 9 | The literacy spaces we create for our learners and the experiences they have as readers and writers can make an impact in their learning outcomes. This training offers educators a deep dive into reading and writing instruction with a special focus for increasing the effectiveness of instructional methods to serve multilingual learners. Participants will explore and engage in techniques they can implement immediately with students.

Solito: Home, Identity, and the Immigrant Experience
Javier Zamora shares his harrowing journey and explores how identity influences our ideas of home, and brings humanity and warmth to the figure of the "immigrant,” stressing there are always moments of joy, love, and hope, even in the worst of circumstances. Zamora puts a face to child immigrants and the humanitarian crisis along the US-Mexico border.

Gifted Instruction & Supports

Summer Gifted Institute
The ESC is hosting an in-person professional development opportunity for teachers and GIS’s on June 5 & 6, 2023. The two-day professional development will focus on talent development models to increase gifted identifications and support for high achieving, high ability students. Participants will also receive the Primary Education Thinking Skills 4-book set.

  • Day 1: Monday, June 5 | Talent Development strategies and implementation ideas presented by Todd Stanley, Gifted Services Coordinator at Pickerington Schools

LETS GO-OH Summer Symposium
LETSGO-OH created the Summer Symposium in 2019 to bring together educators and district staff using Apple devices in K-12 school districts. Designed for teachers, instructional and technology coaches, and technical support staff, the symposium provides an opportunity for attendees to engage in hands-on learning, collaborate, and network with other Apple users. Attendees will leave the event with proven strategies for integrating Apple-based technology in instruction.

Literacy Institute

Summer Literacy Institute
Join Central Ohio educators for a day full of intentional literacy conversations and reflections, with both national and local experts. Shifting the Balance authors Jan Burkins and Kari Yates will join the early literacy conversations alongside Kelly Gallagher and Penny Kittle as they expand our range of knowledge in adolescent literacy.

Special Education Training

STACK Institute
Based on the TEACCH methodology out of the UNC at Chapel Hill, STACK is an approach for working with students on the autism spectrum. Workshop topics include the characteristics of autism, fundamentals of structured teaching, classroom designment and management, development of work systems, visual supports, schedules, and strategies for effective use of classroom staff.

Workforce Educator Boot Camp
Educators will gain valuable insight to the skills, training and education needed to help prepare their students for the workforce. Participants will gain knowledge directly from local industry leaders in the pathways of construction, modern manufacturing, information technology and healthcare. Conveying Central Ohio career pathway opportunities to students will enhance their understanding of career options.
